Abby Walker's Child Life Portfolio
Thank you for considering me for your Fall 2021 Child Life Internship Program. I truly hope this portfolio helps illustrate my unique background, extensive experience with children in various settings, devout passion for the child life profession, and most importantly, who I am as an individual, not just as a child life student! I can be reached by phone at (641) 680-1910 or by email at acw3532@truman.edu.
DISCLAIMER: All photos/videos in this portfolio are of children I have worked with outside of healthcare settings, and are being utilized with parental permission.
Child Life Volunteer Experience
University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital
Total Hours: 236.5
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology/Minor in Music from Truman State University, and an Undergraduate Certificate in Child Life from American Public University!
Since I live in a rural area, my nearest children's hospital, University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, is 100 miles away! I didn't let this stop me from pursuing a career in child life; I just made the 200 mile round trip drive every Friday to volunteer for a year and a half! I volunteered in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic and 9th Floor Inpatient Unit. My volunteer experience helped me develop a strong understanding of the profession; I witnessed how child life services differ between inpatient and outpatient settings, and learned about the unique needs of children and families facing stressful healthcare encounters. Most importantly, I developed a strong passion for pediatric psychosocial care and figured out that child life is my calling!

Child Life Practicum Experiences
MercyOne Children's Hospital and HSHS St. Vincent Children's Hospital
Total Hours: 253.75
Since I have completed two different child life practicums, I feel I have obtained a broader understanding of the child life profession that has greatly prepared me for my internship experience. To learn more about my practicum experiences, please click on the Child Life Experiences tab!
My first practicum at MercyOne Children's Hospital was primarily procedure-based and very rigorous; it provided me with a strong foundation in medical terminology, developmental theory, and child life assessment and intervention techniques. I wrote chart notes for my supervisors and provided preparation and procedural support to several adolescent patients in Medical Imaging. I was also able to normalize the hospital environment for 5 pediatric patients from Yucatan, Mexico who had been brought to MercyOne for life-saving heart operations through MercyOne's Yucatan Heart Program. Despite the language barrier, I didn't have a ton of trouble communicating with these patients because play is the universal language of children! For my final project, I created sensory resource boxes that promote effective coping in pediatric patients with autism diagnoses.
While my second practicum at HSHS St. Vincent Children's Hospital was primarily play-based, it really helped me develop confidence in my ability to introduce services and build rapport with patients and families. I was given numerous opportunities to put the assessment and intervention skills I had acquired during my first practicum to the test, and was very successful at developing therapeutic play interventions that met patients' individual psychosocial goals.
